The British Board Independent is a non government body. This has classified cinema film since it was set up in 1912 and videos since passing of the video recording Act in 1984.
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) don’t come up with guidelines themselves they use the public by asking them what they think is appropriate and acceptable to be seen in a U, PG, 12A, 12, 15 18 and 18R. They will change it every four years and do the same progress again by asking the public. But when they are analysing the film they have to consider the following:
· Discrimination
· Drugs
· Horror
· Imitable behaviour
· Language
· Nudity
· Sex
· Theme
· Violence
this is because when it comes to classifing the DVD they will have to see if there is any of these involved:
There are 4 main areas which are considered:
- Nudity/Sex
- Violence/Imitable behaviour
- Discrimination
- Language
after they have done this they will then be able to decide what the film will be Classified as.
PG- Parental Guidance (General Viewing but some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children)
A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older.
Discrimnative Language or Gestures are unlikey to be in a PG movie.
Images of drugs will not be seen. Nudity and Sex is not strong only very mild and infrequent with only natural references like innuendos.
Horror and violence is not tense and can only last a short amount of time, it is also not in detail.
12a/12- Suitable for 12 years and over. The same criteria are used to classify movies at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. This meaning material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. but as for a '12A' thisis classified for only cinemas, which mean you can see 12A films when you are accompanied by an adult. but as for a 12 rating no one under 12 can buy or rent 12 rated DVD.
It has been given a 12 as there is no discrimonatory language thoughout the film, you are not likely to here any aggressive language or behaviour unless clearly condemned. Any misuse of drugs can only be infrequent and should not be 'glamorised' or be given instructional detail on how to take them. If hanging, suicide or self harmig or any dangerous behaviour, this should not dwell on detail which could then be copied or appear as harm free. and easily accessible weapons shound not be 'glamorised' either. with the language, moderate laguage is allowed. as for sex/nudity, sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers and with nudity it is allowed, but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet.
15 - This category is for those 15 and older. People under the age of 15 cannot watch a 15 rated film in the cinema, or rent a 15 rated DVD/video.
Discrimination should not be seen on 15 rated films. There should not be detailed scenes of imitable, dangerous behaviour which can be copied by the young audience. There may be frequent use of strong language in 15 rated films, but the strongest terms should not be frequently repeated throughout the film. With drug taking it is aloud to be shown but not to promote or encourage drug misuse. Nudity and sex, sexual context is allowed but without strong detail. there may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but stronger the reference are unlikey to be acceptable unless justifies by context.
